Today I taught my husband to Spin!

An argument leads to a lesson in spinning!

My gorgeous husband and i had a few choice words with each other this morning, mostly in relation to family dynamics and a number of personal challenges that have presented over the past week. Hubby’s kids are up staying with us, while their Mum sorts out a few things. This of course is an adjustment for all of us and the first few days are always full of emotional ups and downs, hence our ‘harsh word’ to each other.

Lately, rather than continue the downward spiral into a full on argument, I have found myself retreating to my wheel. I sit and begin spinning, focusing my attention and energy on creating the perfect single. As i do this I find that my anger dissolves and my thinking becomes clear. It is almost like when i take myself to a place of simplicity, all else becomes simple.

Hence, as i am spinning, both my hubby and his son Miles come and sit nearby. Miles watches intensely, asks some questions and I ask if he would like to learn. He responds with some interest before heading outdoors to find the girls.

I decide to set up the other wheel (a traditional that is staying here for a few days before going to live with our spinning group) for Miles to have a go on. I bought in some raw unwashed fleece, as i think this is the easiest for beginners to get “the feel” of spinning. I carded some up and began spinning some to be ready to teach Miles and the girls if they wanted to try.

Dear Hubby watched with interest as i completed all this, so i asked “Do you want to have a go?” He responded with “Yeah, I’ll give it a try”. So he sat down and had his first experience of spinning…as he did so our tension disappeared and we both apologized for our behaviour….spinning it seems is a healing art!

The kids came in and were fascinated that Dad was spinning!

Perhaps the whole family will be spinning by the end of the week??

Say hello to Miss Joybelle, the newest member of my spinning family… isn’t she gorgeous? I am SO in love with her. She is so easy to spin on, she has had a wonderful spinning life with a lady for about 9 years and now she has come to live with me and be loved, loved, loved!

Miss Joybelle

I initiated Miss Joybelle with some yummy merino/soy from EGMTK’s

My First Lace Project!

Posted on November 26th, 2008 in For the love of Yarn & Fibre, Knitting Fun, Swaps & Games by deb

Another swap took place last month and i decided to knit my first ever lace project! My swap partner was Luisa (aka Bumpy on Rav). Most of her knitting it seems from scouring her knitting projects on Ravelry have been for her four boys. There was little in her projects made for herself, so i set myself a challenge to knit her this gorgeous lace scarf i found in her “queue” (to make) file, it is called the Tiger Eyes Lace Scarf Her favourite colours were blues and purples, so i had the perfect yarn.

Getting off to an early start, I soon found myself in frustrating territory. Getting so far and then losing my way. Eventually i made it through one whole repeat of the pattern only to lose my way on the second repeat! What was i thinking learning a lace pattern for a swap item??? Time was ticking away and the deadline to send our parcels loomed. I was never going to finish in time!

I frogged (pulled the scarf out and started again) too many times to have kept count. I literally was starting to turn green like a frog! I felt so bad, as not only was Bumpy going to receive her parcel rather late, but she was the organiser of the swap! She knew i was her partner! How embarrassing.

However after much determination I completed this project. It was, in fact, quite simple once i got the hang of it and i am eager to make another one for myself. I knitted it in two parts and then grafted the two pieces together using kitchener stitch so there would be symmetry when it is worn.
